THE WEEK IN RETROSPECT 19/04/15

Resurrecting my random web trawling series ‘cause the internet is such a gold mine of interesting dinner conversation topics and I just can’t sit on it so get your trigger fingers ready because you can bet the sites I’m linking to are gonna have links you simply must click too! As always, the vicious cycle continues.

Let’s start with this Singapore Core Math quiz question that went viral last week. I won’t lie, I threw my best grey matter at it and 30 minutes later after concluding August 17th must be the answer (my subconscious must have zeroed in on this date ‘cause its my favorite month and contained my favorite number because I seriously can’t remember my logic here) I was ready to pat myself on the back and looked at the answer. *Cue face palm* One of my friends who allegedly arrived at the answer in under a minute even said he was disappointed in me, apparently I used to be much smarter.  You guys, that was a low blow because my above average intellect is my pride and joy. Anyhow, I've decided to cut down numbers at my future wedding reception, the date and venue will be worded thusly on the invites! *snigger snigger*

But if you didn’t get it either, fret not. Having an above averageIQ isn’t all it’s cracked out to be if this BBC article is to be believed. In fact it appears to be more of a curse than a boon. Everything has a downside huh?

Moving on to lighter topics, these 3 guys set out to find their doppelgangers from allover the universe and the Internet being the internet, submissions started streaming in almost immediately! As someone who has been told a kajillion times that I look like someone else, I find tales of twin strangers endlessly fascinating. I mean how is it possible? If DNA doesn’t determine our looks, what does? Is it reincarnation? Does God forget he designed someone already and uses the same template for someone else? Kubanga that pic of Betty Nambooze and Mesach Semakula at the Kabaka’s Run was a jaw dropper. I think these guys’ parents have some explaining to do!

While still on the topic of Royalty, my favorite fashion bloggers released their debut adult novel loosely based on the Kate Middleton – Prince William romance, except Kate is American and guess what, you can read the first seven chapters here. I haven’t read them yet because I can’t stand the suspense of not knowing what happens next so I’m planning to wait and devour it in one sitting when Amazon finally ships my order over.

Speaking of books, you will want to read about John Green's editor, Julie Strauss-Gabel, who gives Tough love like it's never been given before. Twenty pages plus of notes about the first draft of The Fault in our Stars in which she basically told Green the novel read "like bad John Green fanfic". Lucky for us he heed her advice and the awesomeness that is Augustus Waters saw the light of day.

Also if you haven't watched Janelle Monae’s Yoga video I don't know what you're still doing here reading this! That video is phenom and I can't stop fantasizing about making a fan video because the way she put that twitter troll in place gave me life!

What interesting stories did you guys come across? Kindly leave a link and help reawaken my grey matter. Peace and Love.

THE WEEK IN RETROSPECT 07/02/14

Just spent a week of going HAM at the gym with my awesome new trainer and I promise you - I'm soon going to be the girl you keep in your fitspo folder to body shame yourself. What I'm yet to figure out though is a balance between my daily 1 and half hour gym sessions after work and my writing, so chances are the blog is going to suffer.
Anyhoo, some news on Instagram. Solange is killing it as artistic director of Puma! Her instagram feed is pure heaven. That said, isn't it a bit like how London styled that girl on ANTM like a mini-her? Because this aesthetic is so strongly Solange its not even a case of drawing inspiration from her style ... its a copy and paste scenario. Luckily for Puma and us, Solange's style rocks!

They all look like mini-Solanges, don't they?

Gloria Wavamuno posted this behind the scenes shoot for Kampala Fashion Week. No prizes for guessing who the Face of Kampala Fashion Week is!

Yes, that's Aamito on the floor making fierce love to the camera! Can't wait for the big reveal and all the accompanying fashion! It's the inaugural Kampala Fashion Week, right?

THE WEEK IN RETROSPECT

Bow down for the queen!

I'm sure lots of stuff went down this week, but all that was eclipsed by Queen Bey dropping her 5th studio album all super secret like! When my twitter feed showed that, I knew my work for the week was down! Haven't listened to a full track yet but these preview videos SMH included in its article have been on replay since! Happy Weekend loves, if anyone needs me I'll be in the BeyHive.

Tina Knowles appears in the video for "Grown Woman." You guys!!!
Just tentatively (because I haven't listened to the whole thing yet) putting it out there, "Mine" ft Drake is my jam! And I say that without being particularly fond of Drake.

THE WEEK IN RETROSPECT

Introducing a new feature on the blog that will ensure that however busy I am, at least I’ll have a weekly post for you guys. It will basically be recapping the pop culture moments that tickled me. Hope you like it.
Starting with Mama North West.

Jaws around the world dropped for a variety of reasons when the Karl Lagerfeld shot, Ricardo Tusci styled May shoot a heavily pregnant Kim Kardashian did went public. I mean; there was jam, there was bling, she wore GRILLES, there were veils and Yankees caps, it is Kim, it is la Lagerfeld, it is Ricardo, and we all know how badly Kanye wants Wintour to put Kim on the cover!

Mercedes Benz fashion week is like fashion blogger’s paradise. For me though its like a buffet that leaves me undecided what to pick and what to leave. So I disregarded the runway shows in favour of street fashion. This particular instant was a PR stunt by British singer and designer Madame Allsorts to debut her sweatshirt line which was modeled by Anna Wintour clones and featured a cartoon drawing of her face and the words “Spring, Summer, Autumn”. I loved it!

Idris Elba is generating Oscar buzz for playing the eponymous Nelson Mandela in a movie co-starring Skyfall’s Naomie Harris as Winnie Mandela. I shall leave this there without comment for your enjoyment.

In a week filled with movie premieres and fashion week, Olivia Wilde wears my favorite dress of them all to pick up the first ever IMDb’s STARmeter Award. I half fear I would sell my soul for an optical illusion dress this good! Lord, it whittles her waist down to a handspan! My dream.

These deserve their own post, amirite?

Mani rings are the best thing to happen to nails since…well, since nail art. They’re like ducals but longer lasting, more versatile, and reusable. Even Queen Bey is all up in this! And if this isn’t up to your speed, may I interest you in temporary cuticle tattoos?

Also this happened. Twitter, I love you

Action hero, politician and former muscleman Arnold Schwarzenegger and boxer-turned-actor Wladimir Klitschko (on-again boyfriend to Hayden Penettiere) swapped shirtless pictures of themselves on Twitter
