BOOK GIVEAWAY! The Language of Flowers

Amazon just delivered an order made 6 months ago that had gotten lost in transit! Thing is after 2 months' wait the delay was reported to Amazon and they efficiently replaced the lost books at no extra cost. So that's how it is that I find myself in possession of two copies of *The Language of Flowers*
Like all bibliophiles I wish more people read the books I love, that's why I'm putting the new copy of Flowers up for grabs in my first ever Book *Giveaway! For one thing florists would stop putting yellow roses in wedding bouquets. Secondly, we'd have more flower emojis to just convey  more emotions and meanings. Not to mention how romantic it all is :)

Anyone can grow into Something Beautiful

The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it’s been more useful in communicating mistrust and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster-care system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her only connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings.

Now eighteen and emancipated from the system with nowhere to go, Victoria realizes she has a gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them. But an unexpected encounter with a mysterious stranger has her questioning what’s been missing in her life. And when she’s forced to confront a painful secret from her past, she must decide whether it’s worth risking everything for a second chance at happiness.

CATCH 22

This blue monochrome look might be my favourite for the month! Although the month has just started so really there’s not that much to compare it to. I wearing feather earrings, paired with a long sleeved tee with a quill emblazoned prominently on its front and an embossed peacock print box pleat skirt.

"S"

Gorgeous gorgeous paper!

For the last 2 weeks or so since I updated my OS to Mavericks I've been in iBook heaven! I had the longest list of backlog from my book club on Box 'cause apparently every other member on it owned a kindle and they weren't that concerned that I was unable to open epubs to upload pdf versions too. So I would sadly trawl the comments sections and leave one or two about how I think the author is phenomenal. *sad face*

Then in came iBooks! I'm not exaggerating when I say I've been sleeping with my laptop and that my saddest time of day is during the daily commute when I have my baby with me but can't turn it on to read my books! Long story short, I'd finally come to the brink, dangerously tipping into ebooks >paper books territory.*gasp*

And then, and THEN!!! I learnt about S. It had me at conceived by JJ Abrams. Yes, that JJ Abrams. You know those passionate fan girl feels when you're ready to sell you grandmother into slavery just to attend Comic Con? Yeah, by the time Fringe ended I was ready to sell myself into slavery for this man! So when I read about the premise of the book, a story within a story, two people bonding over a book, writings in margins, extras such as postcards, photographs, newspaper clippings, letters—even a hand-drawn map written on a napkin from a coffee shop slipped within the pages! I was in real danger of spontaneous combustion! Such was my excitement, I couldn't wait to spread the gospel.

So I whatsapp an ebook aficionado friend - the founder of my book club - about "S"
(My phone can't screen cap so I'm just going to type the whole thing out.)

Me:*all excited typing*
Hey! So I've been in a happy iBooks daze, balancing on the precipice of becoming an unrepentant ebooks fan, when I learnt about J J Abrams' "S"! Its like the moment a spell is broken!

A: Now you're convert
A: Oh well

Me: Nope. I fell backwards off the fence! Still in love with paper books.
Me: The "S" book is only available in hard copy and its premise would suffer from any attempts at making it digital

A: Wait till you travel to Japan

Me: What's in Japan?

A: Just talking about the fact that when you travel, you can't carry all your paper books with you.
A: I value my ebooks for that
A: btw S is available as ebook
A: I just downloaded it now

Me: No
Me: Nooooooo...! *screams while covering ears*
Me: I can't even. Lemme just go to bed

A: LOL
A: I love you too

He obviously knew I was super hating him at that moment. Talk about busting my bubble! But for real though, my blonde moments in that conversation aside, I think the "S" experience will be lessened in the ebook. I mean, the napkin! How are they going to capture the napkin in an ebook??? If Fringe taught me anything about JJ, its that there's going to be clues upon clues upon clues hidden all over the place! But oh well, it is a love letter to the written word and digital though ebooks might be, they are still written words.

I dunno about you but I love quotes, all kinds of them. I've fallen in love with people that died decades ago just because I read something they said and felt like I had come home from a long lonely journey (Here's looking at you Mae West).
And then my love for comics goes way way back from reading the kid's section in saturday papers and devouring Modesty Blaise at the TV guide. Nothing made 12 year old me happier than a new Betty & Veronica comic book. (*side bar* At one point, a friend and I started a blog and named it Betty & Veronica. Then we both forgot our joint password!) Anyway, in high school I discovered Calvin & Hobbes and it has become a sort of litmus test for me with boy friends, if you don't chuckle even once through a Calvin & Hobbes book then I'm afraid we don't share the same sense of humour and therefore our relationship is doomed!

So imagine my joy when I discovered Zen Pencils, this great comic blog where former graphic designer cum cartoonist Gavin takes quotes submitted by readers and adapts them in to a comic strip! Over the moon doesn't even come close! People, I left this milky way and went euphorically zeroing off into an as yet undiscovered galaxy. These are some of my recent favourites, I especially love the Erica Goldson one below! Gavin put up the teacher one as follow-up to show that however true Erica was, teachers are still invaluable. The first one by Robert Frost just makes me chuckle! Because, come on!
He also has posters for sale and stuff so usually the jpgs on his site are tiny but high res so just zoom in on these ones okay? Or just go over to his site for the real deal.
