INTO THE WILD - Part I

My totem! Just going about its usual life in the African Savanna, blissfully ignorant of this here blogger spazzing out!
I'm Entebbe born and bred. So like every other person from E town I spent all minor holidays during my formative years either at the beach or at the zoo. So I'm no stranger to wild animals. I think by the time that old lion died it had even learnt my scent!

STILL ABOUT THAT...

...red and blue life. I had never realised how often I gravitate towards this particular colour combination until just recently when I started documenting my personal style. Turns out most of my accessories are in one of these colours or the other.

SEEING RED

Or Maroon. Or Burgundy. Or Masala as Pantone will say, depends on the lighting really. Lately I've gotten into the habit of planning outfit mood boards when I have a fancy occasion coming up. For the evening reception part of this wedding I was thinking red, midi length, body hugging, long sleeved or off the shoulder. Then the hunt for this perfect dress begun in earnest.

What I was hunting for.

LET'S GET COOKING

Lemme me introduce you to this yummy looking fellow
Looking good starts from the inside out. So this year, this lil blog over here will not only document what I put ON my body but also what I put INTO it. Think Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP but less obnoxious :)

TAKING STOCK 04/07/14

My outfit last Saturday at a friend's surprise birthday dinner. Dress from Warehouse modified into a skirt and crop top.

So this is the Taking Stock post ( template from Meet me at Mike's) I promised to rewrite. Except of course a few things are different than what I had filled in in the first draft. No prizes for guessing what catastrophe befell me in the past hour.

Making : Sunburst mirrors. These are the first off a line of Interior Decor products I plan on making. No point in dreaming small, right?

Excuse the mess. I was making them from my office after hours but will move the makeshift workshop home this weekend.
I have never been prouder to announce to the universe that I made this. If you've ever been subjected to any meals prepared by yours truly you know why this is a very big deal.
Cooking : Oven roast whole herb chicken. Got a new gas oven a couple of months back and I'm putting it to good use. No more 3 minute noodles for this girl.
Drinking : Water. Not nearly enough though. Need to do something about this.
Reading: The Passage by Justin Cronin. Was recommended by the bae because I'm all about the paranormal and books with kids as protagonists. Loved the first half, cant read the second half after the sun goes down or if in the house alone. What can I say, I spook easily.
Wanting: To work from home. Or at least convince these guys flexi-time is a better deal for me.
Looking: Out my office window to the Friday flea market along Kira road.
Playing: Dumb Ways to Die. Silliest game ever.
Wasting: Time. Always. Procrastination is top of the list of my vices.
Sewing: A new sequined bottom to a dress. This should in fact be its own blog post.
Wishing:That I had backed up that C Drive before they upgraded my office PC. No one told me desktop was saved on the C drive. So when I tried copying and it told me 2675 minutes left I just gave up. Afterall the program files can be reinstalled, right? Right. Except not the desktop. Now I'm sans most of my projects since April.
Enjoying: This respite from thinking about the C drive mess until I have to explain it to my boss. Which I hope is never.
Waiting: For the weekend. This is going to be one long afternoon!
Liking: How awesome the Paple Rayn/Candle It launch was.
Wondering: Has no one really invented a time machine yet?
Loving: My bae.
Hoping: That my boss understands this honest mistake. (Hmmm, this post is really turning out to just be about that damn lost work!)
Marvelling: At technology. Where does deleted stuff really go? No, honestly think about it, there has to be someplace all this stuff ends up.
Needing: A vacation.
Smelling: Nothing. I'm currently battling a bad cold
Wearing: Thrifted pencil skirt.
Following:The cast of Orange Is The New Black on Instagram. I'm obsessed with this show, obsessed I tell you.
Noticing: How slow time goes when you can't wait to leave the office.
Knowing: That I have to be more consistent and hardworking with the blog and my other projects than I was in the first half of the year.
Thinking: About my other products in the Home Decor range.
Feeling: Antsy.
Bookmarking: Design blogs
Opening: Multiple tabs in my browser of various blogs I follow.
Giggling: As I scroll down the iwastesomuchtime.com page

So what have you been up to guys? Any 2014 resolutions to fullfil before the close of the next 6 months? Also if anyone has a time machine that I can use to go back in time and back up my work, I'd be forever grateful.

CandleIt cupcake and star scented candles. Giveaway coming soon.

Blogger for Android App sucks

Happy 2nd half of 2014!!! This was supposed to be my grand return about being MIA for so long. I had a post drafted out and everything! Basically recapping whative been up to these past few months and culminating into the Paple Rayn Launch! This this genius app deleted instead of publishing!

I have never felt so let down by technology since I lost my final essay I'd worked on all semester on the morning of submission! It was all I could do not to smash my laptop and tear out my hair and run naked for thehills. This is a close second.

Anyhow I'll probably rewrite it and post it up but I had to post something today -  this year has flown by on Concorde level speed! Blink and we'll be in 2015! Have a great last 6 months of 2014 and if you know how to activate the autosave before publish option on Blogger for Android app please clue me in.

CONSIDER THIS A BOOKMARK

HAPPY 2014! It's almost a year since I started this particular blog and what a year it was! Short of getting engaged/pregnant/Masters degree I think I experienced everything a twentysomething does!
I have big hopes for this year (don't I always?) and since most of my ventures are collaborative efforts, chances are high that my natural tendency to procrastinate won't get in the way!

This view you guys!!! This view! Its something else I tell you. I even entered this picture in the #HolidaysAtHomeUg promotion so go over to http://thepearlguide.co.ug/holidaysathome/ and vote for me! I took so many more breathtaking pics at the Source of the Nile, Jinja but the promo rules are you have to be in the pic so this is what we are working with.
A collage of the second half of my holiday (1st half back home in Entebbe was basically an eat+read+watch movie+sleep orgy): I moved into new digs, went gift shopping (read spent ages trying on outfits and taking selfies) with Terri, ate a lot - A WHOLE LOT - this is in fact going to be a post of its own, toured Jinja - this place has more hotels/Guesthouses than Entebbe!!!
Picture on right is four days before the left and I think I gained about 3 pounds in the interval! No worries though, living with my vegan bro should make shedding the pounds a piece of cake!
I'm still hangover from the best christmas break ever so I'm not really back in blogging mode hence the bookmark but figured I out to say something about the new year before that got stale. Toodles!

"S"

Gorgeous gorgeous paper!

For the last 2 weeks or so since I updated my OS to Mavericks I've been in iBook heaven! I had the longest list of backlog from my book club on Box 'cause apparently every other member on it owned a kindle and they weren't that concerned that I was unable to open epubs to upload pdf versions too. So I would sadly trawl the comments sections and leave one or two about how I think the author is phenomenal. *sad face*

Then in came iBooks! I'm not exaggerating when I say I've been sleeping with my laptop and that my saddest time of day is during the daily commute when I have my baby with me but can't turn it on to read my books! Long story short, I'd finally come to the brink, dangerously tipping into ebooks >paper books territory.*gasp*

And then, and THEN!!! I learnt about S. It had me at conceived by JJ Abrams. Yes, that JJ Abrams. You know those passionate fan girl feels when you're ready to sell you grandmother into slavery just to attend Comic Con? Yeah, by the time Fringe ended I was ready to sell myself into slavery for this man! So when I read about the premise of the book, a story within a story, two people bonding over a book, writings in margins, extras such as postcards, photographs, newspaper clippings, letters—even a hand-drawn map written on a napkin from a coffee shop slipped within the pages! I was in real danger of spontaneous combustion! Such was my excitement, I couldn't wait to spread the gospel.

So I whatsapp an ebook aficionado friend - the founder of my book club - about "S"
(My phone can't screen cap so I'm just going to type the whole thing out.)

Me:*all excited typing*
Hey! So I've been in a happy iBooks daze, balancing on the precipice of becoming an unrepentant ebooks fan, when I learnt about J J Abrams' "S"! Its like the moment a spell is broken!

A: Now you're convert
A: Oh well

Me: Nope. I fell backwards off the fence! Still in love with paper books.
Me: The "S" book is only available in hard copy and its premise would suffer from any attempts at making it digital

A: Wait till you travel to Japan

Me: What's in Japan?

A: Just talking about the fact that when you travel, you can't carry all your paper books with you.
A: I value my ebooks for that
A: btw S is available as ebook
A: I just downloaded it now

Me: No
Me: Nooooooo...! *screams while covering ears*
Me: I can't even. Lemme just go to bed

A: LOL
A: I love you too

He obviously knew I was super hating him at that moment. Talk about busting my bubble! But for real though, my blonde moments in that conversation aside, I think the "S" experience will be lessened in the ebook. I mean, the napkin! How are they going to capture the napkin in an ebook??? If Fringe taught me anything about JJ, its that there's going to be clues upon clues upon clues hidden all over the place! But oh well, it is a love letter to the written word and digital though ebooks might be, they are still written words.

DID I MENTION I'M ON THAT FITNESS TRACK?

Yeah, I used to be the yo-yo type. I'm very healthily conscious til I get too skinny and start looking sick so I backtrack to the unhealthy habits. And the cycle would continue. It was probably ingrained from back in my school days. Get holidays, eat like its going out of fashion, lie on the couch all day watching tv, pack on the pounds. Return to school, get skinny. I would gain weight easily, lose it even faster. Then I hit my 20's and that thing they say about the metabolism slowing down? I think mine just did. I've been trying to lose 3 pounds since the beginning of the year and I've only succeeded in gaining twice that! So I'm getting with the programme and overhauling my exercise and eating habits. It's not a fab, its a lifestyle change. So expect to see more fitness and health posts on here.

I was so proud of beating my time from last year! Didn't carry my camera on me so approached the first celebrity with a smart phone (they have to be nice to their fans)  - who turned out to be comedian and TV presenter Afande Kelekele and asked him to bluetooth the pic to mine! Pic on right is my week old guns :) as I started gyming a week before the marathon.

To start it off, heres a great illustrative guide to portion control from Eat Smart and Workout Hard. You know the old adage; Abs are made in the kitchen and sculpted in the gym. Leggo!

So simple! And yet ...

To control your weight you must control your portions

Before Eating, Divide The Plate
Here’s a simple rule to portion a plate properly: Divide it in half. Automatically fill one side with fruits or vegetables, leaving the rest for equal parts protein and starch. This way, you begin to see what a properly balanced meal looks like. Spaghetti and meatballs? Steak and potatoes? They’re only half a meal, incomplete without fruits and vegetables.

Pre-Portion Tempting Treats
The bigger the package, the more food you’ll pour out of it. When two groups were given half- or 1-pound bags of M&Ms to eat while watching TV, those given the 1-pound bag ate nearly twice as much.

Head Off The Mindless Munch
Five minutes after eating at an Italian restaurant, 31 percent of people couldn’t remember how much bread they ate. If you’re worried you might do the same, have the bread removed from the table.

Downsize The Dishes
If you’re one of the 54 percent of Americans who eat until their plates are clean, make sure those plates are modestly sized. On a standard 8- to 10-inch dinner plate, a portion of spaghetti looks like a meal. On a 12- to 14-inch dinner plate, it looks meager, so you’re likely to dish out a bigger portion to fill the plate. When researchers gave study participants 34- or 17-ounce bowls and told them to help themselves to ice cream, those with the bigger bowls dished out 31 percent more ice cream.

Limit Your Choices
The more options you have, the more you want to try. In one study, researchers gave two groups jellybeans to snack on while they watched a movie. One group got six colors, neatly divided into compartments; jellybeans for the other group were jumbled together. Those given a mix ate nearly two times more.

Use Your Power For Good
Most homes have a “nutritional gatekeeper” who controls 72 percent of the food eaten by everyone else. The person who chooses food, buys it, and prepares it wields power. If that’s you, take advantage of it.

Avoid A See-Food Diet
Office workers who kept candy in clear dishes on their desks dipped in for a sample 71 percent more often than those who kept their candy out of sight.

Turn Off The Television
The Vast Wasteland leads to vast waists. It’s not just the couch-sitting. TV distracts you from how much you’re eating, and the more you watch, the more you’re likely to eat. In a study comparing how much popcorn viewers ate during either a half-hour show or an hour-long show, those who watched more television ate 28 percent more popcorn.

Think Before You Drink
Pour cranberry juice into two glasses of equal volume: one short and wide, the other tall and thin. Most people pour 19 percent more cranberry juice in the short glass because the eye is a poor judge of volume in relation to height and width.

Serve Good-For-You Foods Family-Style
Not all portion-control strategies are about eating less. You can have as much as you want of some foods. Place the foods you want your family to eat more of―salads and vegetable sides―within easy reach on the dining table.

COMING SOON ...

Purple Rain Fashion Uganda - the coolest online shop ever this side of the Sahara. Had a professional photoshoot and all for the web site and I will share the pics on here too as soon as the photogs finish touching them up.
In the meantime, you'll have to make to with the ones I snapped with my little 16mp cammy.

In the interest of full disclosure, y'all need to know that I had just run 10k in a little over 80mins so wasn't at my smiziest best. My muscles were planning a mutiny and all the rest of me wanted to do was sleep for 3 days straight! But at least I did my part in helping MTN & Co. get clean water to Karamoja :)

All Accessories available soon at Purple Rain

Still on the topic of the marathon, I didn't see much point in painting my tootsies as they wouldn't be on display. So when the photogs decided they had an opening just an hour after I came close to beating Kiprotich and was in definitive #BeastMode, a pedicure was out of the question.

The Jay Manuels and Patrick DeMarchelier to my Tyra Banks ;)

MINIMALISM.

Greetings from the middle of nowhere.
Okay, I exaggerate, but not by much. My new housemate once in possession of our collective monies decided to panic and ignore all advise from professional architect and avid pinterestor yours truly, and signed us down to a 4 month sentence of hard commute with no chance of parole in a middle aged neighbourhood!
There are no gyms, no chain stores (I dunno how I'm going to cope without my saturday Tusky's vanilla muffin), poor network reception, the last taxi stage is like a 10 mins bike ride away... along a feeder road (!), and the straw that broke this camel's back; there no carpentry shops!
How am I supposed to supervise the making of my masterpieces that will become heirlooms once I leave this mortal coil if the carpentry place is not within walking distance???

On raising my concerns with housemate dearest he texted back, "Chill that DIY crap of yours, we should get leather sofas. I think there's a place along Jinja road with a set for 3.6m ..."
That text alone (3.6m!!! Leather???) sent me online to soothe my frazzled nerves.
I have to convince him to see the error of his ways. I have to. I mean, have you seen those sofas? They always make me think of the strain on shirt buttons when someone has over eaten. These on the other hand ...

In a perfect world, this is how my new home would look like. Neutrals - Black+White, natural wood, chrome.

And upon getting more money I'd upgrade to this. Clean lines, earth tones, clutter free.
Curves can complement lines without being clunky. I can deal with this.

-Ditto-

And if I must go the plush  furniture route, I'd want the pitstop to be this white quilted lounge.

Clean lines, natural fabrics and natural palettes are so underrated! The first is my favourite. It looks good, seems to have great ergonomics vis-à-vis back support, AND appears easy to clean!
Also I must say it matches my stackable beds (which will be debuted here soon as my room is blog worthy) and, I can't emphasise this enough, what you see is what you get! None of that nonsensical saw dust stuffing and rotten wood frames disguised by great upholstery you get with most Ugandan Carpentry shops. I think this is the reason I'm averse to arm rests. So I just have to convince my dear new housemate that I know best.

Ah, Life. Thine sense of humour is unmatched!

Hey guys,
So remember that time I handed in my resignation letter so I could focus on my personal pursuits like blogging and graphic design and all? And then proceeded to go off the radar for weeks on end? Yeah, that time.

I became an aunt to the cutest baby that ever was and ever will be. And then proceeded to get freaked out by what her presence in my life entails vis-a-vis souls/reincarnation/pre-destination before her dad (my brother told me I'm being weird)

Well, I’d barely put up my legs with remote in hand and a stack of dvds begging to be watched when a friend called with this unturnable-down offer! So much as I wanted to lounge and be my own boss, I decided to go in for the interview, see what it was about and maybe start part time work in a month after getting my affairs in order, you know, for the financial security and such. Poor little delusional me. The reason the offer was irresistible is because they were swamped! I started work then and there! Never mind about part timing and all!
So yeah, there you have it. I’ve become a desk monkey again and this time I can’t even think of leaving cuz gosh, I’ve made such major moves lately that not having a regular cash flow would be the worst kind of slow suicide I could commit.

Being October, work or no work, the girls and I weren't about to let the one night a year that we can dress up like total sluts and no other girls can judge go by unacknowledged. So we slapped on some makeup and hit the town!
(*side bar - I DIY'ed the witch's hat from plastic bags and bond paper. I'm supposed to be a cross between Professor McGonagall and lady Stoneheart in case you couldn't tell)

But fear not, I’m going to figure this out, this balancing thing I mean. Going to pick a leaf from the most hardworking woman in the biz, Kim Kardashian (haha, I kid.) songstress, designer, #thuglifer, muse, producer, weedlover, globetrotter, actress, (she was in This is the End, you guys) and all round awesome 24 year old Riri and multitask this b*tch called the quarter life crisis into submission! I mean if she can sell out stadiums while partying all night, designing for RiverIsland, producing StyledToRock and keeping Melissa and half of Barbados in honest employment then surely I can keep my 8 to 5, blog, workout, and get my design firm off the ground without dying of exhaustion!

When I'm not working or being Aunt Awesome or partying, I'm house/furniture hunting! Mehn, October has been like being run over by a freight train and now the holiday season is upon us!

LIFE

So I recently took a big step in this cycle called life. I handed in my resignation letter. With nary a safety net but my hopes and dreams. So lets see how that turns out.
Til then, I leave you with an excerpt from Sylvia Plath's "The Bell Jar" illustrated by Gavin of ZenPencils.

Pick a fig guys, any fig, just don't watch indecisively as they wither and drop! Catch you on the other side!

A SUM OF AN ARCHITECT'S LIFE

My all time favorite poem, since I was 13 when I first came across it in my high school library, that I want tattooed in flowy cursive across my ribs, that I recited at my undergrad entry interview, that I think of and draw strength from when times are hard and the struggle doesn’t seem worth the effort, is a Psalm of Life by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. (This poem deserves its own post and since this one is going to be a long one, I’m leaving that for another day.)
Today this verse is resonating through my mind in particular;

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

As the deadline for the competition draws closer and my nerves get wound tighter and tighter and the 24 hours a day don’t seem nearly enough… I fantasize about giving up. What’s the worst that can happen I ask myself? So my resume won’t have that stellar item of being a finalist in a nationwide competition. Lots of other people won’t have it too…
I know though that I would never ever forgive myself if I didn’t even try. I would keep tormenting myself with what if thoughts…convinced that if only I had stuck it out I would have won! And we all know that is a fake way to live.
So I drew upon my ever-comforting wise poem and went looking for some footprints in the sands of time to take heart from and that’s how I landed on Life of an Architect blog. Below in its entirety is an article that I couldn’t have read at a better time because it’s exactly what the doctor (poet?) ordered. I highlighted my favorite bits. Thoughts in brackets are mine.

Within the last few months, the number of emails I have received from people asking whether or not they should get out of architecture has been staggering. Equally surprising are the emails I receive that ask for direction on whether or not they should go into the field of architecture. The answer to both questions is easy:
Maybe?
For some people, the first question I ask them – the ender question, is always the same:
“Why do you want to be an architect?”

(My answer to this has never changed. I think I was about 10 to 12 years old, watching DWTV in those off-peaks hours when the local stations streamed it in lieu of scheduled programming and would gaze spellbound at the screen as one exotic building after another was showcased. Sometimes they would interview the geniuses behind the structures, these architects, these demi-gods. I wanted that. I wanted to create. And I knew I would be good at it. I was great at art – sketching, painting, crafting, calligraphy, mosaics…name it, and I could do it. I loved technology. My father is a flight engineer and a gadget junkie and I was daddy’s girl, I knew way more about the latest advancements in the field than the average teenager in the 3rd world. So the fact that there was a profession that could combine my two loves and strengths, and throw in a way to achieve my quest for pseudo-immortality to boot, I was sold! *side bar – my other plan to achieve pseudo immortality is to write.*)
If the answer is I have always wanted to be an architect, I move on to the next few questions. A person’s motivation for becoming an architect is singularly important. I went to college to become an architect while my friends simply went to college. My resolve and dedication towards becoming an architect was tempered by many all-nighters, 207 credit hours (187 required for my degree), and no fraternity for me – nobody who graduated from the University of Texas School of Architecture the same time as I did was in a fraternity (or sorority) – you just didn’t have the time.
It was hard to get to where I am at right now and the people who were doing it because they thought it would be cool, for the money, or some other reason other than ‘I have always wanted to be an architect” didn’t make it. If there is something else out there calling to you, architecture probably isn’t for you. I haven’t regretted my decision ever.
Ever.
(Lucky guy. What I wouldn’t give for this conviction. Although regret isn’t exactly how I describe my sentiments towards my profession…it is more of disillusionment…a “this is it?” moment. Note the “?” instead of the “!”. I have such grand Technicolor dreams! And reality is more of a sepia tone…all I want is that tornado to take me from this Kansas of Ugandan Architecture to the land of Oz!)
Sure, there have been loads of times when I wished I didn’t work as much as I do, made more money; I even get tired of the ladies who are “architect groupies ” following me around. It’s tough but I have always wanted to be an architect.
This is a portion from an email I recently received which actually got me thinking about this post. The person who sent this loves to design and thinks about it all the time … it’s how she spends her free time, she travels to locations, she studies buildings, she even tracks down the designers in these locations and goes and meets them. In her words:
I really love this stuff, but know that I might have problems working for clients. I can see my temperament not quite matching up with that process. I’m a bit stubborn. And also impatient.
It’s hard, I always wanted to be an artist, and now I can’t figure out how to be a designer.
The traits that she describes won’t keep her from becoming an architect or designer – in fact, I would also suggest that these are important traits that any successful designer should have. Also, if her stubbornness and impatience are so uncontrollable as to be a real problem, she’ll have issues in any profession other than ‘Hermit’. In my response email to her, I included a list of quality architecture programs near her and should she decide to pursue a Master’s degree in architecture, I think she’ll do really well.
As to the emails that are asking if they should get out out of architecture – that one is more difficult to address. Architects aren’t the only professionals that are suffering right now. In my mind, it’s similar to changing jobs because you don’t like someone where you are working – not a real good reason if it’s the only one because you probably won’t like someone at the next job either.
I still like to try and find out why a person who has gone through the process to become an architect is thinking about leaving. Have your motivations for being an architect changed? Is it circumstantial? Maybe it’s simply that you want to make more money or you simply hate the job that you currently have. I can appreciate why someone would like to make more money but are you worth more money doing what you currently do? For example, in my circumstance I am well paid for a 10 person residential firm considering my name isn’t on the front door. If I wanted to be paid more, my first couple of possible moves would involve looking at larger firms or more commercially focused production firms, not becoming a lawyer. For me, it would be about trying to find a balance and still continue practicing architecture, not changing professions.
(Those two paragraphs right there hit the right dosage for my ailment. Architecture is my dream! These other issues are just that, issues. There’s no guarantee whichever profession I will wind up in won’t have the same issues. So. Back in the saddle it is!)
I’ve always been pretty good at shooting the bull and have been told I would have been awesome at sales. The very idea of selling anything just to be selling anything would literally make me shrivel up and die. To my way of thinking, I would be better served by investing ALL of my time and resources into winning the lottery before selling paper or plastic o-rings. While both would probably ruin me and force me into living in a cardboard refrigerator box in some alley, going into sales would probably add “crazy” and “pavement licker” to my resume.
When trying to select an appropriate image for this post, my mind started wandering a bit and it landed on John Picacio. John and I went to architecture achool together and we both spent time in Europe traveling together in 1990. John and I were never all that close but even 20 years later I can still remember John’s sketches; they were ridiculously good. I still see one sketch in particular in my mind’s eye. John and I were in Siena, Italy, and John was drawing the Piazza del Campo. He was using the white of the paper as much as his sketch pen to bring the buildings to life and it was simply amazing to see. We lost touch after awhile but I always thought he was so good at drawing, why would he be an architect? Apparently John came to the same conclusion and is now an internationally recognized and award winning illustrator.
And I say good for him.
John could always draw better than the people who taught our drawing classes and he figured out that this was something he would rather do than pursue a career in architecture. I’d say it’s worked out pretty well for him. So if you’re interested in becoming an architect because it’s all you’ve ever wanted to do than I would heartily urge you to continue on towards your goal. If you want to become an architect for the groupies, money and fast cars, you might want to reevaluate your options. I’m not suggesting that it can only be one or the other but if you’re already unsure … you’ve got some difficult roads to travel in front of you.
What would you say to someone contemplating a change? Things will get better but will it be worth sticking around? Doctor’s are starting to run into problems but we’ll always need them. Lawyer’s have their issues too, but unlike architects who are working themselves towards irrelevancy, (He lost me at this point. How are we working ourselves towards irrelevancy?) at least Lawyer’s make it so we can’t get rid of them. Architecture defines me and I wouldn’t like to envision myself doing something else – but what about the people who don’t know? What would you tell them?

The comments though, while all polite and everything, were less encouraging. Other than stararchitects, the rest of us seem to be battling serious inner demons and social/monetary shortcomings at every turn! To read the comments, go over to the original article here.
