UG Bloggers Challenge 1: Totems of Uganda

Pesh over at ConcernsOf1UgandanYA informed me of a Ugandan bloggers challenge that is currently underway where one can write about anything under the sky as long as it pertains to ART; be it the performing arts, fashion design, architecture or books.

CONSIDER THIS A BOOKMARK

HAPPY 2014! It's almost a year since I started this particular blog and what a year it was! Short of getting engaged/pregnant/Masters degree I think I experienced everything a twentysomething does!
I have big hopes for this year (don't I always?) and since most of my ventures are collaborative efforts, chances are high that my natural tendency to procrastinate won't get in the way!

This view you guys!!! This view! Its something else I tell you. I even entered this picture in the #HolidaysAtHomeUg promotion so go over to http://thepearlguide.co.ug/holidaysathome/ and vote for me! I took so many more breathtaking pics at the Source of the Nile, Jinja but the promo rules are you have to be in the pic so this is what we are working with.
A collage of the second half of my holiday (1st half back home in Entebbe was basically an eat+read+watch movie+sleep orgy): I moved into new digs, went gift shopping (read spent ages trying on outfits and taking selfies) with Terri, ate a lot - A WHOLE LOT - this is in fact going to be a post of its own, toured Jinja - this place has more hotels/Guesthouses than Entebbe!!!
Picture on right is four days before the left and I think I gained about 3 pounds in the interval! No worries though, living with my vegan bro should make shedding the pounds a piece of cake!
I'm still hangover from the best christmas break ever so I'm not really back in blogging mode hence the bookmark but figured I out to say something about the new year before that got stale. Toodles!

WEARABLE SHOE SCULPTURE

12 Shoes for 12 Lovers

I dunno guys, it seems like such an awesome idea but most of these shoes are fugly, right? On his blog, he tells a story about each shoe and the ex- lovers that inspired them. I like them better as art than as shoes.

TOP ROW FROM LEFT: Honey, Cry Baby, Gold Digger and Heartbreaker.
MIDDLE ROW: Ice Queen, Hot Bitch, The Virgin, JetSetter
BOTTOM: The Boss, GI Jane, The Ghost, The Rock

The sketch for *Hot Bitch* looks much hotter than the actual shoe/sculpture.
I'm still not convinced *The Boss* looks anything like a gun, I thought of knuckledusters instead.
*Cry Baby* looks surprisingly edgy when worn! To think it was what I dismissed first before seeing it in action!
I wish both feet of the *HeartBreaker* bore same levels of interest. Having cupid's arrow just through one shoe seems very lazy as if? Not that I can do this, but i think having that arrow head poking through the left foot while the vane end pierced through the right would have been more balanced, you know?

MARRIAGE OF MY TWO LOVES

Every once in a while you come across something so awesome you wish you had thought of doing it first. Even more rarely, it's done so well that you can't think of a single thing you'd change and therefore cannot begrudge the original doer... We've all been there, right? Now let me take you along on my latest trip to envious-but-not-hating-town.

From HIMYM to Will & Grace, this guy's detailing is meticulous!

Inaki Aliste Lizarralde, an interior designer and artist, is the brains behind these awesome popular TV show apartment floor plans. Whats not to love when architecture marries TV shows? I first came across the TBBT, SATC and Friends ones last year and proceeded to forward them to nearly all my whatsapp contacts only to get "kewl" "interesting" for replies! I don't understand why this did not blow their minds as much as it did mine! Anyhoo, I'm sure you guys are a more discerning bunch and are going to take to the heavens to dissect and debate the pros and cons and accuracy of all these, right? Let's get to it then!

I love the walk-in closet and ensuite bath!

This is needless to say my fantasy apartment. I fully intend to have this size of closet or even bigger because thus far every place I've lived in involves me hanging more clothes folded up in suitcases than hanging up in my closet.

Watching Two & a Half Men, I never quite got it why they called Charlie's home a Malibu mansion! It seemed normal sized and I figured that was just estate agent speak for "has a bit of beach". Seeing it all laid out now, I totally get it though.

And this is the realistic 2 bedroom apartment my friends and I are hoping to rent in our twenties. So far, luck hasn't been on our side.

Or this. Although I take issue with how tiny all the bedroom windows are!

Dream sprawling mansion anyone?

The Simpsons! Eeeek!

Typical bachelor pad. Awesome bathroom though.

I of course love this because it already has the drawing table in position with lots and lots of light!

Typical bachelor pad 2

How I passed the time when I couldn't blog

Making collages of my projects, that's how.

Obviously once the material search begins they final appearance changes but at least these give the client some idea...

Around the web in nifty ways

What's a girl to do when her blog gets faulty? Rant and rant and rant!
I was on a roll there! Then this happened! Aaargh.
Trust me once I get everything ironed out, you're going to be hit by an avalanche of posts!

Til then let's kill time with this edition of Around The Web In Nifty Ways, let's start it off by checking out my professional blog, which I had abandoned once I landed a job I love but now forced to revisit because wordpress doesn't suck balls like blogger does! (Yes, I have blogs/accounts on every platform you can imagine; tumblr, LinkedIn, InstaGram, LiveMocha, GChat...all of them. Multiple accounts for some... Including myspace and hotmail - way back I even forgot my passwords. So blogger really should style up since I chose it out of so many!)

Apparently, there is such a thing as reinventing the wheel people. This totally made me think of The Dragon's Den which is such a fun watch for a show where intimidation millionaire entrepreneurs basically trash people's life work in a matter of minutes. Such interesting inventions out there in the world, you just have to think hard at it.

Not like the MyZiki, Ug's version of iTunes when we very well have youtube and waptrick and a gazillion other free download apps/sites no to mention  the artistes themselves giving out begging people to play their music. Study your market people...you really think a Ugandan would pay $1.00 for a song Capital FM plays 40 times an hour? I just don't think it'd work...now if they did a Ug version of Craig'sList on the other hand...

This link actually was meant to be a post all on its own because it's about the amazing Tilda Swinton who is basically my favoritest androgynous person ever (have you seen Tilda channeling Bowie? You should!)and who I never thought I'd pity til I watched We need to talk about Kevin. That movie is like a mother's worst nightmare. But I digress. Anyway, lucky NewYorkers can check out her display "The Maybe" (I'm looking at you Ali, take a break from the MOS ;) and check out the MOMA) which showcases her sleeping in a glass box. Which I think is an intimate as it gets! Even more than sex, sleeping is so so personal because you literally have no idea/control over what you're doing!

And in more Hollywood news, a biopic of Oscar Pistorius and his late model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp is in the works with about two scripts making the rounds of studios and casting agents already rooting for Gosling and Theron to play the eponymous athlete and his fated girlfriend. I die. Sorry. But I and a million others called it way back when the news broke.  Just as I called the Barefoot Bandit movie and up to now nothing has surfaced...or did I miss it?

And now I come to the end of my ramblings. Please blogger, get your act together, this little blogger loves her pics.

Under The Sea

I just rewatched The Little Mermaid right before prepping this post so bear with me while I indulge my inner Sebastian a bit ...

♫...Under the sea
Darling it's better
Down where it's wetter
Take it from me...

...Just look at the world around you
Right here on the ocean floor
Such wonderful things surround you
What more is you lookin' for?...

...Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they slave away
While we devotin'
Full time to floatin'
Under the sea...

Aaaah, a reggae  singing crab will make my day anytime. Also, that movie just turned me vegetarian again. But enough of that, lets move on to Fresh2o campaign shoot for World Water Day.

Candice shot Keira, Kelly, Kimberly, and Lily underwater for this campaign

ANTM is just the best of guilt pleasures

I think 60% of everything I know about fashion photography and modeling I learnt from watching ANTM. It might contain massive doses of dreckitude most times but you have to admit Tyra really knows what she’s doing. I think ANTM has had like 4 underwater shoots, (most recent being cycle 15, right? I hope they do one for the CoEd cycle! Grrrr)or something and I never realized how good those aspiring models were til I saw photographer Candice’s shoot for Fresh2o to commemorate World Water Day on March 22. Any one of these below would have sold this.

Anyway, Candice shot models Kelly Brook, Kimberly Stewart and Lily Cole as well as actress Keira Knightley underwater for this campaign with various props such as stickmen cut outs for Lily Cole and film reels for Keira. The sites also seem different cuz we have a mermaid Kelly frolicking among ruins while Kimberly (I keep almost writing Kristen, lol) is shot reclining against blue tiled pool steps.

If they put that tail on me I'd just sink like a stone! Effortless floatation is one of the many things that still elude me!
Kimberly gives good face! That reclining shot is as if she's on a chaise lounge not submerged under a pool holding her breath and trying not to swallow chlorinated water!

I'm not sold on the shoes but as Tyra would say, she's modelling from H to T!
What can't Keira do?
The shoot aims to raise awareness about the global water crisis. Over 5,000 children die each day and billions of impoverished people are without access to fresh water! Makes you pause and think, doesn’t it? To contribute, go to www.fresh2o.org. And now I'm off to re-watch some of my favourite cycles :)

Beauty lies in the eyes of Kate Middleton

You guys, remember the public outcry that happened when the official royal portrait of the Duchess was unveiled and a collective “Shhhhaaaa, that’s the best they could get” was heard around the world? Well, Kate and Will loved it but obvi back then I thought they were just being polite. Because that portrait was really not flattering as if… but trust me it could very well be a Vermeer, pearl earrings notwithstanding, compared to this.

Apparently Norren Denzil did not just scoff at Paul Emisley’s efforts, she decided to show him how you go about painting a beloved new comer into the royal fold. Be the judge people, be the judge…

Maybe a side by side comparison will help? Please bear in mind that Kate probably sat for Emisley while Norren obviously painted from a photo.

Emisley's smirk is still a bit too ape-Mona Lisa but come on, there's a world of difference between these two and the difference is all quality. And its probably even more evident if they' re viewed in person.

Norren is now on a campaign to get Kate to view her painting thereafter she hopes to sell it for about $4000 and donate the proceeds to charity.
And if you don’t hear from me for a while, I’ll be working on my rendition of “I Dreamed A Dream” on you-tube to show the academy I could have won that Oscar.
