SET DESIGN

First of all, yay! Sometime during the last month my blog finally cracked 1500 page views and I caught it! Considering its just 4 months old and I've never taken to social media there's still hope to garner views in the hundred thousands and make this my full time job. Speaking of job switches...

These are photos of three views of office sets and one of a living room set of a critically acclaimed legal drama

My dad and I were talking about my career prospects the other day because at the moment I’m so dissatisfied with architecture in Uganda (mostly because clients just don’t appreciate the profession enough? And those that do are the big scale companies that want to put up a school or hospital or hotel. These pay good and give you leeway with the design and all but they are not about to hire a graduate architect with less than 5 years experience! Now, I know I know; I have to do the time and wait my time. I was never good at waiting though and I think my attention has already started to flit because…) I told him what I think would put the beat back into my heart would be designing interiors of like private jets and tour buses and luxury yachts! That sure tickled his bones! He’s like “you’re complaining about hoteliers not hiring you and you think a yacht owning billionaire would?”

The strength and elegance of the female senior partner is brought out by a classic mix of reds and neutrals in her office. I specially love the red vases as centre pieces!

The guys get darker tones... stained wood furniture, black leather seats...I love the subtle implication of power. Suitable for all the mind games this guy does!

I stand by my “Why not?” because in the latter case it’s really about taste not so much about can you put up the bid security of 50m and do you have a renowned team of consultants you work with and how impressive is your portfolio of previous projects, yadda yadda yadda.

Calm blues and neutrals for the single working mother with two children. They just set the mood with just a few carefully selected pieces of furniture and colour matched wall paper! Who wouldn't want this job?!

Anyway, at some point in this conversation the talk shifted to how sparsely furnished and uninspiring the BBA house is this year! And that’s when I had my eureka moment! Set Design! *ding ding ding!*

Did you guess the TV Show? I had wanted to talk about each office design and all but figured why limit myself? Why not make this a regular blog series...and so I will. Wait for the next instalment of my set design dreams and the TV Shows/Movies that inspire them! And if you do not watch the Good Wife, just take my word for it and buy the entire 4 seasons! (Ha, that sounds like I meant buying the hotel!) Thank me later!

I think this would be challenging, stimulating and rewarding in equal measures! Obviously, my sights are set on Hollywood but in the meantime (next 2, 3 years?) I can settle for these Ugandan TV shows cropping up everywhere. Lord knows they missed the mark - even if the mark was humorous irony - having an HB Toxic poster hanging up in Patra’s hostel room!

MARRIAGE OF MY TWO LOVES

Every once in a while you come across something so awesome you wish you had thought of doing it first. Even more rarely, it's done so well that you can't think of a single thing you'd change and therefore cannot begrudge the original doer... We've all been there, right? Now let me take you along on my latest trip to envious-but-not-hating-town.

Inaki Aliste Lizarralde, an interior designer and artist, is the brains behind these awesome popular TV show apartment floor plans. Whats not to love when architecture marries TV shows? I first came across the TBBT, SATC and Friends ones last year and proceeded to forward them to nearly all my whatsapp contacts only to get "kewl" "interesting" for replies! I don't understand why this did not blow their minds as much as it did mine! Anyhoo, I'm sure you guys are a more discerning bunch and are going to take to the heavens to dissect and debate the pros and cons and accuracy of all these, right? Let's get to it then!

I love the walk-in closet and ensuite bath!

This is needless to say my fantasy apartment. I fully intend to have this size of closet or even bigger because thus far every place I've lived in involves me hanging more clothes folded up in suitcases than hanging up in my closet.

Watching Two & a Half Men, I never quite got it why they called Charlie's home a Malibu mansion! It seemed normal sized and I figured that was just estate agent speak for "has a bit of beach". Seeing it all laid out now, I totally get it though.

And this is the realistic 2 bedroom apartment my friends and I are hoping to rent in our twenties. So far, luck hasn't been on our side.

Or this. Although I take issue with how tiny all the bedroom windows are!

Smash has made me nostalgic

Yesterday I decided to stop this nonsense of working during my leave and then complaining of being drained and lethargic when I get back to office so I switched off my phone, switched on the telly and pulled my stash of accumulated series and the remote next to me. I then proceeded to spend the next 16 hours in legit couch potato mode, only shifting to refill on snacks or fluff my pillow! It was bliss! Simple unadulterated me time just the way I like it. I got through three first seasons but this particular post was inspired by Smash!

I love Marilyn Monroe, who doesn't? But the entire 15 episodes I was really rooting for anything other than Katherine McPhee's character to play her! I just couldn't stand that nice girl Cartright thing she had going on! It was sooooo irritating! Please understand I'm not complaining about the writing here. No, the writing was superb! Smash is everything Glee wishes it could be! A legit show about a fictional musical. My issue is with Katherine McPhee's face! She is just too nice-girl looking. (Also this entire paragraph was a tangent from what I'd originally set out to write about. That's how much that Iowa girl nagged me!)

Anyway, all the Marilyn talk made me nostalgic for the old hollywood era so I figured this is as good a time as any to post these love quotes I've had in a folder on my desktop for ages. Enjoy and happy week!
