SEEING RED

Or Maroon. Or Burgundy. Or Masala as Pantone will say, depends on the lighting really. Lately I've gotten into the habit of planning outfit mood boards when I have a fancy occasion coming up. For the evening reception part of this wedding I was thinking red, midi length, body hugging, long sleeved or off the shoulder. Then the hunt for this perfect dress begun in earnest.

What I was hunting for.

#SlayTheInternet

My lover got married over the weekend and she slayed so hard, yours truly has been in a daze all day!
Suffice it to say all wedding inspiration pics that I've been collecting over the years have been deleted. Solange's is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning, the middle and the end of all weddings!!! This wedding gave me life! Behold!

Maxi dresses for the win!

Was totally feeling my croquet braids after all the trials and tribulations I'd gone through for them! Let no one tell you its an easy life having natural hair!

Is it just me or has every other weekend this year been taken up by weddings or christenings or a shower of some kind? I seriously don't recall a single weekend when I felt well rested at the end of it all. On the plus side, its always a great opportunity to pull out the glad rags one doesn't wear to work or church. Like at my friend Philippa's wedding.

Paired my maxi dress with some nude heels, gold jewellery and a heart ring to celebrate the love. I'm cheesy like that :)

The couple is quite the conservative born again type so I figured I couldn't go wrong with a maxi dress. The reception was held at Wonder World Kansanga where I spied this double staircase I just had to pose before!

Ignore the huge Mutebile poster. Turns out the building is some university or other and he's chancellor.

Love this dress to bits! The back (sorry I don't have a pic of it) reminds me of the white grecian gown Serena van der Woodsen were at the white party the time her and Dan woke up at the beach the next morning. My dad bought it for me a couple of years back ad I'd never really had chance to showcase it till this wedding.

No, I did not catch the bouquet! This was just the a souvenir from all the festivities. Have a great weekend!

I'm still here...

...not dead yet :) Just overworked. Sorry for the silence, suddenly found myself with too many things on my plate this month! I didn't really release my twice a week blogposts had dwindled to such a sorry state that twice a month would be a more apt description until a friend asked if I'd given up on the blog! (Highly unlikely since this is how I'm going to become a household name!)

Anyway, so about that competition I was working on, I went through! Yay! But...wait for it...so did my firm! Which is such a double edged sword! Now I have twice the workload and half the time because I have to spend my 8 - 5 doing company work, my 5 - 7 brainstorming with my colleagues how to approach this and my nights thinking of how to do it on my own! Confused yet?

So how about my lunch breaks you say? Oh, those. Huh, I took it upon myself to help a colleague with their dissertation - sourcing for reference material for their case studies to be exact. This involves me going to the Statistics library across town in lunch hour jam! Are you feeling my pain yet?

It gets worse, I'm job hunting. Yes, searching and interviewing for new placements while still keeping down my current bird in hand until the bush produces the two its hinting on having. How is this going? Well, I'm blogging from my old desk same as always.

Obviously I'm not complaining over just 3 things though. Nope. Not me. I happen to be part of a charity group that helps underprivileged  orphans and I start off each month saying I'm going to play a more active role. June started off great, we visited the orphan one evening and made note of what had to be improved and how to raise the money. But since then, all brainstorming meetings coincide with my site visits or my competition meetings or my market trips...I've failed to make a single one!

Then there's this private Interior Design job for a 10 bedroom mansion I was just about to complete before the client decides to relocate and convert the house to a bed and breakfast! I'm back to square numero uno. I'm tempted to let the commission go, but only slightly... I'm half hoping I can outsource this to an intern maybe? Hmmm, but then again I want it to be my design, my creation, my signature throughout those rooms!

And then, just when I thought I had figured out how to juggle all these, an offer I couldn't decline dropped into my laps! I'd been angling to get into the wedding decoration market ever since my old schoolmates started getting married off like flies! So when this church acquaintance asks if I can handle a 250 person intro and reception job on a $400 budget I said of course I could! So I quickly drafted up an idea board and everything... I loved the Ankara theme so I made sure to sell the bride to be on it! She might have loved it even more than I judging by the fact that she changed her cake order from a luwombo cake to the Ankara designed cake featured in my slides! *pat on the back! Well done Mimi, first job and your killing it!* Huh. <.< soon came the practicalities!

Gosh, do you know what this involves? On a $400 budget??? A lot of market scouting to get the cheapest good products, that's what! On foot obviously because I need to be frugal to fit within the budget. And now the city traders are on strike! SMDH!

What I Wore

Aaah, finally the long awaited outfit post. (Yes, in my mind y'all keep checking back here on the daily wondering if I have put up a post yet. You, lovely readers, you! *Adorable cheek pinch to you all!*)
Just to catch you up, despite this blog being about personal style (among many other wildly entertaining things), I happen to work for an über-conservative boss who when I had just started here called me aside on more than one occasion to tell me my outfit was too *ahem* adventurous! I tried to keep a straight face. She did have some valid points, I guess, from her POV. But the technicalities of adventurous were never really addressed until I wore a neon print knee length shift dress, feeling very much like I own my personal style and won’t be fazed by strange looks thrown my way. That lasted until I checked my email to find a memo not unlike CBS’s Grammy one! Long story short, no neon, nothing that goes above the knees when I sit and cross my legs, no cleavage, nothing body-hugging or with high slits, and no heels over 3 inches! I kid you not. Never mind the fact that all my working-girl daydreams consisted of me dressed in exactly what she’d vetoed! And she tied it to my monthly bonus! (Kinda evil genius of her, non?) And I want 200% bonus so we have to make sacrifrices, OOTD posts will be few and far between L But Outfit of the Night/Occasion should definitely make up for this! \J/ Yay!

This are the most comfortable shoes I own. Its like my feet are floating on clouds! Ok, maybe that's  kinda exaggerating. But every time I'm not sure about the venue I'm going to (Grassy? Paved? Gravel? Indoors?) and how vigorous or not I'll have to booty shake, these babies are what I wear.
I went for amethyst accessories since the shoes had a hint of that on the platform and violet floral print. It didn't hurt that my spects happened to match the colour scheme too. Score!

This is what I wore on Saturday to Victor's wedding reception. Over slept and didn't make it to church so that outfit never got worn although I was going to wear a green halter-neck sheath. It is a conservative mid-calf length although the bottom is sheer. Oh well, another day I guess.  Had on a red manicure with floral nail art to match the print in the shoes. Went for red on my hands instead of the amethyst on the toes since I figured it would last from Saturday til today and this would be my nod to Saint Valentine. Had planned a tutorial too but realise if I include that and pics of what other people wore at the wedding this post will entail endless scrolling. So my take on style at Victor's wedding has been split into three. This (What I wore), the Nail Art tutorial, and What They Wore.

The Reject Pile: I'm one of those stereotypical girls that try on a gazillion outfits even though they have already zeroed in on what they want to wear! You know, just to be sure they aint leaving the better look behind. I hope I get to wear these someplace soon. Any of you have a wedding with an extra place setting, just leave a comment with the date and place!
